White Rose Oct 2008 Rally - Bolton Abbey

Situated just outside Skipton in Yorkshire,
the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
runs  4 miles between  Bolton Abbey and Embsay,
which was built in 1988.

Most trains are hauled by superbly  restored steam engines,
the oldest one dating back to 1908.
Both stations have gift shops, tea rooms and picnic areas
with ample free parking.

The long awaited extension to the Embsay railway  happened late 1997.  The line now runs to
Bolton Abbey station, which is a reconstruction of the original building.  The new station is about 1.5 miles
away from the ruins of  12th century Bolton Abbey itself - an excellent place for walking  and picnicking
the River Wharfe.

Plans are afoot to extend the line into Skipton as soon as certain contractual
and financial details have been made.
A crisp, sunny Autumn day saw Dulcie and I taking Josephine to Bolton Abbey Station.
After failing to find the organiser of the event beforehand, the railway told me to "just turn up";
this we duly did along with two friends in a Renault.   I had to smile while reversing nicely
into position in the line up I overheard one gentleman say to another "it's two women!"
We had a mooch around the other vehicles admiring some fine specimens and reminiscing
over some 70s cars ... "my Dad had one of those".

Andrew came along later on his motorbike, and was even allowed to park with the other many
fine motorcycles taking part in the rally by the station.
We had a good look round the gift shop and while there learned that the tea shop next door served
cakes. Better save some room for a dessert later perhaps.

After walking up and down the platform we watched the engine as she was filled up with water.
Several other men were fussing around cleaning up and polishing bits here and there.
We then took our places in the carriage, it felt strange having compartments, my how quickly
we forget how things used to be.
We steamed on up the line to Embasy and made our way to a pub in the village for
lunch with our friends,  returning to the Bolton Abbey station tea shop for tea and cake !

We met COWS members old and new along the way.  What more could you ask for?
What a thoroughly delightful day out - we shall definitely go again next year - if they will have us....
